In 2010, we realized that food does not taste the same way it used to when we were children. We eat for the experience and enjoyment of food. Not just to fill up our tummies. “Nothing tastes the way it used to” is a common phrase we use on a daily basis.

We tend to dismiss it as a rose-tinted memory of times past or the result of failing taste buds. But we were on to something – food has changed. With this realization in mind, we set out to investigate the cause of this change in food. It became apparent that the seeds have been genetically modified, and they are no longer natural, heirloom seeds.

Producers are using genetically modified seeds, synthetic fertilizers, herbicides, pesticides, and chemicals. Animals have also been modified with growth hormones, antibiotics, and GMO feeds, which altered the genetics of the animals and plants. We then decided to source produce that is grown naturally, from heirloom or organic seeds, nonGMO, pesticide-free, synthetic fertilizer-free, and Grass-fed pasture raised livestock with no growth hormones or an@bio@cs. It was not easy hunting for food across South Africa and the SADC region. It became a daunting exercise that took most of our weekends.

At the end of the day, it all became worthwhile when we had a tasty meal prepared from natural, GMO-free, organic, and quality produce. We created rela@onships with small-scale producers and farmers who are committed to growing organic, natural, non-GMO produce. They work in harmony with nature, protect the soil, and preserve the diversity of heirloom seeds. They treat livestock ethically and humanely, giving them the space and freedom to roam around freely and feed on green pastures for better health. From this experience and the friendships that have been created, VanaVaMutapa Heirloom Foods was born. Sharing is caring. Nature is life. Food heals the body.
